The authorities said Monday that a typhoon hit eastern Madagascar early in the week, killing at least six people and injuring three others, two of them missing.
Tropical Cyclone Ava passed through Madagascar on Friday and Saturday, hitting most of the island's eastern shores with winds ranging from 140 to 190 kilometers.
The National Bureau of Risk and disaster management said in a statement that more than 13,000 people had been displaced by the hurricane, while more than 16,000 schoolchildren had been on a school holiday until Thursday, due to fears of floods and landslides.
In March 2017, Hurricane "Ainao" struck Madagascar, killing at least 78 people on the northeast coast, which is renowned for producing vanilla.
Hurricane Anaw destroyed about 30 percent of the crop in the world's largest producer of vanilla, accounting for about half of global production.
But George Gerartes, chairman of the Vanilla Exporters Association, told Reuters that Hurricane Ava did not hit the vanilla production areas and had no "impact" on production.
