A bar association in southeastern Turkish province of Diyarbakir said Saturday that the health condition of 10 women prisoners has deteriorated since they began a hunger strike in protest against a new security measure.
The union said six women in a prison in the Dear Ma'mur region in eastern Turkey began a hunger strike on Nov. 10 November protest an order to wear identification cards when moving outside their rooms, and four other women joined the strike on December 10
The Diyarbakir Bar Association said that women prisoners had lost their weight and were beginning to face serious health problems. Prison officials could not be reached over the weekend to comment on the health status of women prisoners.
The union said that the women who did not abide by the order "were prevented from participating in meetings outside their places of detention, engaging in their hobbies, communicating, ventilation and meeting with their lawyers."
